Ideas for using NanoLites in LEGO 10254 Holiday Train

Here are a few photos we took to show a NanoLite installed in the new LEGO 10254 Holiday Train. It took less than five minutes to do the install! No pieces were added or modified and no alternate construction techniques were needed.

Here's the finished product. Looks great!




For the passenger car we used a NanoLite MCU and 3 NanoLite warm white cables. We chose to place the NanoLite MCU in a convenient location so we could easily access it for turning it on and off. The extra cable was simply wrapped around the NanoLite battery holder.

For the Christmas tree car we used a NanoLite MCU, two flashing red NanoLite cables and two flashing blue NanoLite cables. The extra cable was simply wrapped around the base of the tree. The whole tree assembly still spins freely on its base with the lights installed.

Hacking Cable Connectors

The number one complaint we've ever had is how hard our connectors are to disconnect once they are connected. Here's a little hack to help remedy that!


Here's our standard eLite connector. You're going to need a X-Acto knife or similar to modify it. Kids, get adults to do this for you! To modify the connector, simply shave off the protrusions shown here (circled).

Once you're finished you should have a completely smooth side like shown here. That's it; you're done! Hopefully that will make your connector easier to disconnect from a socket!

How to externally power an eLite Jr MCU

If you have some minor soldering skills, its easy to externally power your eLite Jr or eLite Jr Signature.

There’s a programming header slot of the end of one side of the MCU with 5 holes all in a row. The first and second holes from the outer end aren’t used for power, the center is ground (GND), the next one over is 3-5v positive (V+), and the last one isn’t used for power. See the attached photo for clarification.

Don't forget to take out the CR1225 battery!!

LED Cable Identification

For the past few months, we have been rolling out new and improved LED cables to make LED color identification easier for you! Identification can be sorted out on most cables by the color of the heat shrink we use on the LED end of the cable. Here's a quick list to help you sort out which colors and styles of [standard 6 inch or 12 inch] LED cables you may have.

Heat Shrink Color = LED Color/Type

Black or Black/Black = unidentified LED color/type (older LED cable type)
Blue or Blue/Blue = Blue
Blue/Black = Flashing Blue
Blue/Green = Flashing Multicolor
Green or Green/Green = Green
Green/Black = Flashing Green
Orange or Orange/Orange = Orange
Red or Red/Red = Red
Red/Black = Flashing Red
Red/Blue = Flashing Red and Blue
White or White/White = White
White/Black = Flashing White
Yellow or Yellow/Yellow = Yellow
Yellow/Black = Flashing Yellow
Yellow/Orange = Flickering Yellow
Yellow/White = Warm White

There are a few key components to the eLite (pronounced: e-light) system that, once you get familiar with, will allow you to add lights to anything large or small. Here are our most basic components and what they do:

eLite Advanced 2 Instructions (extended version)

Here’s an extended guide on using your Advanced 2.0. First, to reset the unit, follow this procedure and the program number will be reset to 1-1 (all lights on):

1. Turn power off (battery box)
2. Press and hold user input button on bottom of MCU (main control unit)
3. Turn power on (battery box)
4. Release user input button (main control unit)

All lights that are plugged in should now be ON.

Installation example - Modulites in the Winter Bakery

Here is just one example of how easy it is to install LifeLites in your creations. Only one LEGO piece was slightly modified (removed the center tube from a 2x2 round plate at the base of the lamp post). Other than that, all pieces are unmodified and installation took less than five minutes!


In the first photo I'll show you the end result. All that was used is one Modulite kit and one 12 inch LED cable (LED color = warm white).

Flickering "Gas Light" PostLites

Ken Nagel has written a great tutorial on how to use a few LifeLites products to simulate a flickering gas light in the BrickForge/LifeLites lamp post. The tutorial also explains what products you will need for making long runs under sidewalks on your layout.

Easter Egg

Did you know there is a hidden feature in the eLite Jr Signature? Simply press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds while the unit is off to find a hidden light show setting! This setting will cycle through all the available patterns for some interesting lighting effects!
